URL Redirect Service Available

Publish Date: Monday, November 17, 2008

ResellersPanel is glad to inform you that a brand new tool has been introduced in the Web Hosting Control Panel of all end-customers. The former 'Password Protected Areas' section has been enhanced to include a new functionality - URL redirection, and is appearing now in the control panels of all customers under the name of URL Protect & Redirect.

The new service introduced by our exclusive reseller hosting developers team is equally suited for beginners and advanced customers, willing to redirect a given URL - directory path hosted on any of our servers, to a different URL, that may be hosted on ours or on a remote server. The tool is very convenient for utilization, allowing users to easily manage (create, edit, delete, etc.) redirected URLs, as well as providing a simple-to-use functionality for all not very advanced users for redirecting web folders without having to write a special .htaccess file for that purpose.

The service is easy to set up. Customers need to choose first a domain or a subdomain name and then enter the correct name of the web folder (URL path) that they want to redirect. Very important part of the service is choosing the HTTP Status code - more information about the different codes follows below and is also included in the 'Help' section. After the customer has selected the desired path to redirect and its status code, what's left is to type the URL which the folder path will be redirected to and submit the form. The 'URL Redirect' tool will then automatically create the requested redirection and will provide from then on an anytime option for removing or editing the redirected URL.

A more specific feature of the 'URL Redirect' tool is that, in addition to the option for regular redirection - activated by ticking Redirect Directive in the beginning of the form, another option is added, for more advanced users - RedirectMatch Directive. The second option allows users to set redirection of a given URL under certain circumstances (pointed in the 'Regular Expression' field). For example, these might be - requested redirection to a different URL only for all files (from the selected folder) having .gif extension, etc.
For all customers who decide to use the 'RedirectMatch' service, it is necessary to fill in the 'Regular Expression' field and explicate there the regular expression that is to be used for the redirection of the selected URL. For more details, see the attached help tooltip.

HTTP Status Codes

Customers ought to be very precise when selecting an HTTP status code for their URL redirection, as status codes, apart from clarifying the type and purpose of the URL redirection, have also SEO function - they optimize the redirected URLs for all search engines. The HTTP response status codes, that can be set, are - 301, 302, 303, 410:

Permanent redirection: 301 - The requested URL has been assigned a new permanent URL and any future references to this resource should use one of the returned URLs. When a URL returns a 301 redirect, it means that the owner of the link asks users to use the new address, which they've been redirected to.

Temporary redirection: 302 - The requested URL resides temporarily under a different URL. When a URL returns a 302 redirect, it means that the owner of the link asks users to continue to use the original address as the redirect might be modified at some time later.

See Other redirection: 303 - The response to the requested URL can be found under a different URL and SHOULD be retrieved using a GET method on that resource. When a URL returns a 303 redirect, it means that the owner of this link redirects the user to another page which is not a substitute of the originally requested page. This method is very popular when you redirect a visitor to a 'Thank you' page after filling in a page.

Gone status code: 410 - The requested URL is no longer available on the server and no forwarding address is known. When a URL returns a 410 redirect, it means that the requested page does not exist anymore.
