File Manager Tutorial
The File Manager section of the SS Web Hosting Control Panel allows users to browse, delete, rename, copy and move files and directories with a single click.
To view a directory and it's contents or to access a single file, simply click on the name of the directory or file. Going back to the previous directory is done by clicking the "Up Level" button. If a user needs to delete, rename copy or move files or directories, he can do so by selecting the check box next to the file/directory and clicking the appropriate button. A prompt dialog window will pop up and ask for confirmation (when deleting a file or directory), for the new file or directory name (when renaming) or for the new file/directory location path.
To change a directory or file permissions, again, check the box next to the file/directory and select the new permissions using the "Permissions" drop menu and click "Change". (A quick Permissions reference list can be found at the bottom of this tutorial).
Users can also edit files. Any file which can be edited is designate by a paper sheet icon. By clicking on that icon, users will be presented with an edit window, in which they can view and modify the file contents. To save the modified file, click on the "Save" button, or click the "Cancel" button to abort the edit process.
Should a user want to create a file or folder, he must fill in the field at the bottom of the File Manager section page. Creating a new folder is done by filling in the "New Folder" field and clicking the "Create Folder" button. To create a new file, the user must fill in the bottom, "New File", field with the file name and extension and click on the "Create File" button.
Uploading directories and files is also easily accomplished using the SS Web Hosting Control Panel. First of all, users must locate the locally stored file or directory by either browsing to them using the "Browse" button next to the 5 upload fields or type in the exact location of the locally stored file. When they're located, simply click the "Upload" button and they'll be transferred on our server. A total of 5 files or directories can be uploaded simultaniously and their permissions can be changed beforehand by using the drop menu below the upload fields.
A quick permissions reference list -
All the different web hosting control panel Filemanager permissions allow different types of users to either read, write, execute or a combine these settings for any given file or directory. The permissions which the Resellers Panel web hosting control panel allows are 600 , 644 , 666 , 700 , 744 , 755 and 777 . Here is a reference table for the different permissions formats and combinations -
Let's take a 644 permission setting as an example. With file/directory permissions, all numbers which are displayed first mean that that specific file permission applies to the owner of the file/directory. The second number always applies to groups, while the third number applies to all other users. So in this specific example, the " 6 ", which applies to the owner, means that the owner can read or write the specific file or directory. The " 4 ", which applies to groups, means that the group users can only read the file or directory. The last " 4 ", which applies to all other users, means that, they too, can only read the specific file or directory.
Here is a table explaining the different permission number meanings -
0400 Allow read by owner.
0200 Allow write by owner.
0100 Allow execution (or search in directories) by owner.
0700 Allow read, write, and execute/search by owner.
0040 Allow read by group.
0020 Allow write by group.
0010 Allow execution (or search in directories) by group.
0070 Allow read, write, and execute/search by group.
0004 Allow read by others.
0002 Allow write by others.
0001 Allow execution (or search in directories) by others.
0007 Allow read, write, and execute/search by others.
Now lets take a look at the permission settings which users can set using their web hosting control panel Filemanager.
600 - This setting means that the file/directory allows only the owner to read or write the file/directory.
644 - This settings means that the file/directory allows everyone to read the file, but only the owner can write to it.
666 - This settings means that the file/directory allows everyone to read it or write to it.
700 - This settings means that the file/directory allows only the owner to read, write or execute it.
744 - This settings means that the file/directory allows everyone to read it, but only allows the owner to write or execute it.
755 - This settings means that the file/directory allows everyone to read or execute it, but only the owner can write to it.
777 - This settings means that the file/directory allows everyone to read, write or execute the file/directory
